In
the historic town centre of Utrecht the prestigious Grand Hotel
Karel V has opened its doors from September 1999. The realisation is
the result of a striking renovation of the former headquarters of
the Teutonic Order. This block of buildings, locally known as the
"Duitse" house, dates from the fourteenth century. Emperor Charles V
stayed here, together with his sister, Maria of Hungary, and
attended the Chapter Meeting of the Order of the Golden Fleece in
1546. These names with historic importance are proudly remembered in
this magnificent building.
Construction started in 1823 by
orders of King William I. In a historically responsible manner, the
hospital wards have been transformed into 39 executive rooms and 5
empire suites in the Napoleontic Wing. In the Garden Wing* we offer
31 standard rooms and 16 executive suites equipped with all modern
conveniences.
All
91 rooms offer a direct telephone line, fax- and ADSL for connection
to your laptop, trouser press, mini-bar, safe, coffee & tea
facilities and controllable air conditioning. The bathrooms are
equipped with a bad, shower, wash basin, shaving mirror, hair dryer,
luxurious bathrobes and slippers. All beds are equipped with quilts.
A number of rooms is reserved for non-smokers. At your request we
can reserve a standard room with two single beds for you.
Grand Hotel Karel V provides free
ADSL in all hotel rooms. You can use the quick connection completely
free of charge and unrestrained, so you can easily deal with your
e-mails from your hotel room.
The breakfast buffet offers different
sorts of bread, rolls and croissants, a selection of meat, salmon,
cheese and sweet sandwich filling like fruit jam. Every morning
there are several warm items, for instance sausages and scrambled
eggs. Contiguously you can enjoy yoghurt or curd, corn flakes and
fresh fruit salads. Besides coffee, tea and milk there is a choice
between different fresh fruit juices or a delicious glass of Méthode
Traditionelle.

Military Hospital. In the latest decade of the 19 th century The
Good Louisa provided the troops with “Oude Klare”.
